BOUGHTON ROAD - HOME OF LA CANTINA!

Ah... Boughton Road, Chester, where la dolce vita lies ready to be discovered in an enclave of Italianate romanza; well at least that's what you'll find when you visit La Cantina, an unexpected and entirely delightful treasure of a restaurant on Boughton Road, where fresh ingredients (sourced from Italy, of course) and vibrant, flavoursome cuisine create an entirely authentic Italian foodie experience. Simple, elegant and 100% Mediterranean, olives and Foccacia with olive oil and balsamic vinegar were a perfect accompaniment to starters of Antipasto Misto (mixed cured meats and vegetables) and Asparagi in Salsa (poached asparagus with a sauce of finely chopped egg, olive oil and white wine vinegar). For main course, the Abbacchio al Forno (tender lamb cooked in the oven in lemon juice and herbs) comes highly recommended, whilst the Pasta Contadino (pasta with pancetta, peas, chilli, sun-dried tomatoes and sweet white onion) is equally impressive. The accompanying absolutely sensational mixed salad contained fresh Sicilian oranges and tomatoes from San Remo, with just a squeeze of lemon and lime plus olive oil as a supremely simple, but effective dressing; and the perfect rustic dessert was a plate of Italian cheese, grapes and figs washed down with the remaining Chianti from a very fine bottle served at just the right temperature. Chef-proprietor Mark Evans is charm personified, and given his boundless enthusiasm plus his undoubted skills in the kitchen, you'll not fine a better Italian restaurant this side of the Via Appia!

This review was posted by Helen Clarke, Truro, Cornwall on 04/08/2010.....Had a wonderful meal at La Cantina on Saturday night while on holiday in Chester from Cornwall. The vongole were super fresh and deliciously sweet and the beef marinated in rosemary, garlic and olive oil buonissimo! The Italian style vegetable and salad served with the main course were also delicious. My two daughters (aged 14 and 8) relished every mouthful (home made soup and pasta for one and antipasti and contadino for the other). I would highly recommend La Cantina with its friendly service and high quality cooking using fresh and authentically Italian ingredients. We enjoyed it so much we returned for lunch on Tuesday before the long jouney home!

We visited La Cantina for our company Christmas Party and had a wonderful evening. Mark, Liz and their team made us all feel really welcome and looked after us. The service was first class, the food delicious and the surroundings very pleasant. I would highly recommend a visit to La Cantina for a relaxing evening coupled with authentic Roman cuisine.

This review was posted by Beth and Simon, Chester on 08/02/2010.....We booked La Cantina for a private function (our engagement party!) for approx 40 people, and we couldn't recommend the experience enough! Liz, Mark and the team gave us such a friendly service, catering to our every need, and being flexible and helpful with all our requirements. We arranged the event at short notice, with only a week and a half to go, but we had an amazing night. Particular mention must go to the food, which was fresh, delicious and very authentically Italian - we had a buffet type hot and cold spread, which was plentiful and everyone commented on how fabulous it was Having spoken with Mark directly beforehand about our food needs he came up with many suggestions and we were overwhelmed with how good it was on the night - fresh salads, lasagne, meatballs, breads, salmon, other meats, crostini, fresh home made pizza, you name it, we had it!The service on the night was great too, with everyone getting served drinks and cocktails with ease. Liz was so helpful with our decorations as we really wanted some balloons and candle-lit ambiance - she worked with us to get the room just right. We will definitely be going again, we were thrilled and as it's just around the corner part of us wants to keep it a secret! You must try it, you won't be disappointed!

The immediate point of difference is the warm welcome you only seem to get from owner-run front of house Restaurants, such as La Cantina. Liz and her team make you feel very welcome whether its for a cup of gorgeous Lavazza Coffee, a bowl of their amazing homemade soup or a 3 course meal. The food of course has to stand out and you have no worries there either. Owner / Chef Mark procures his produce locally where possible and direct from Italy when it matters most.

I've become a fan and a regular at La Cantina over the few months they've been open. Really nice welcoming staff, great food, excellent coffee. You feel as perfectly welcome dropping in for a bowl of their amazing soups, or a coffee, as you are for a meal. The Italian Mixed Sandwich Platter is my favourite, or maybe it's the Tiramisu!

I would endorse the comments already made, this is an excellent addition.

Good food and sensible prices, nice to see someone doing something different, hope it works for them.  “Chester Red” Nov 22, 2009

Made it for lunch today - bruschetta, fab bread, mini plum tomatoes, basil, artichokes, olives and the best mozzerella i've ever had in uk all for £4.80, washed down with a fine red, cheapest on list too - £4.30 for 250 ml
